Incontinence Myths vs Facts – Dispelling Common Misconceptions

Incontinence Myths vs. Facts Dispelling Common Misconceptions and Revealing the TruthIncontinence is a condition that affects millions of people around the world, but despite its prevalence, there are many myths and misconceptions surrounding it. These misunderstandings can lead to unnecessary embarrassment, improper care, and even the avoidance of seeking treatment. At P&S Healthcare, we believe in providing clear, factual information to help those affected by incontinence better understand their condition and take control of their health. In this article, we’ll separate the myths from the facts and shed light on the truth about incontinence.

Myth: Incontinence is a normal part of aging.

Fact: While incontinence is more common among older adults, it is not an inevitable part of the aging process. Many older adults live their lives without experiencing incontinence, and for those who do, there are often underlying causes that can be treated. Whether the issue is related to pelvic floor dysfunction, medication, or other health conditions, it’s important to understand that incontinence is treatable at any age.

Myth: Only women experience incontinence.

Fact: Incontinence is not just a women’s issue. While women are more likely to experience certain types of incontinence, such as stress incontinence after childbirth, men can also be affected. In men, incontinence is often linked to prostate health, but other factors can contribute as well. It’s essential to recognise that incontinence can impact both men and women and seek appropriate treatment accordingly.

Myth: Incontinence is only a problem for older adults.

Fact: Incontinence is not exclusive to older adults. It can affect people of all ages, including children, teenagers, and young adults. Bedwetting in children (nocturnal enuresis), stress incontinence in young athletes, and postpartum incontinence in new mothers are just a few examples. Addressing incontinence early with proper care and treatment is crucial, regardless of age.

Myth: If you have incontinence, you should limit your fluid intake.

Fact: Reducing your fluid intake can actually worsen incontinence. Staying properly hydrated is essential for bladder health, and dehydration can irritate the bladder, leading to more frequent or urgent trips to the bathroom. It’s important to maintain a healthy balance of fluid intake and avoid excessive consumption of bladder irritants like caffeine and alcohol.

Myth: Incontinence is caused by a weak bladder.

Fact: Incontinence is rarely the result of a “weak bladder.” It is often caused by issues with the pelvic floor muscles or problems within the urinary system. Conditions like weakened pelvic floor muscles, nerve damage, or overactive bladder can lead to incontinence. Strengthening the pelvic floor through exercises or seeking medical treatment for underlying causes can help manage and reduce symptoms.

Myth: Surgery is the only treatment for incontinence.

Fact: Surgery is just one of many treatment options for incontinence, and it is typically considered only after other methods have been explored. Lifestyle changes, such as diet modifications, pelvic floor exercises (like Kegels), medications, and physical therapy can all be effective treatments. Consulting with a healthcare professional will help identify the best treatment plan based on the individual’s specific condition.

Take Control of Your Health with Accurate Information

Incontinence is a common condition, but it is surrounded by myths that can prevent people from seeking the care they need. Understanding the facts is the first step toward managing incontinence effectively. At P&S Healthcare, we are committed to helping individuals take control of their health by providing high-quality incontinence products and trusted information. Top 10 tips to help with bladder control during pregnancy

Top 10 tips to help with bladder control during pregnancyBladder control can be a common concern during pregnancy, as the growing uterus puts extra pressure on the bladder. Stay Hydrated

Maintaining proper hydration is crucial, but drinking small amounts of water throughout the day can help manage bladder control without overloading it at once.

Kegel Exercises

Strengthening the pelvic floor muscles with Kegel exercises can improve bladder control. Aim to do a few sets of 10 repetitions daily.

Avoid Bladder Irritants

Limit the intake of caffeine, spicy foods, and acidic fruits, as these can irritate the bladder and increase the urge to urinate.

Scheduled Bathroom Breaks

Try to empty your bladder every two to three hours, even if you don’t feel the urge. This can prevent sudden, overwhelming urges.

Maintain a Healthy Weight

Extra weight can put pressure on the bladder, so maintaining a healthy weight through a balanced diet and regular exercise can help.

Good Bathroom Habits

Take your time to fully empty your bladder each time you use the bathroom to reduce the chances of urgency soon after.

Wear Comfortable Clothing

Tight clothing can increase pressure on the bladder. Opt for loose, comfortable clothing to alleviate unnecessary stress on your bladder.

Use a Supportive Pillow

When sleeping, use a maternity pillow to support your body and relieve some of the pressure on your bladder.

Limit Fluid Intake Before Bed

Try to reduce your fluid intake in the evening to minimise nighttime trips to the bathroom, but ensure you still stay hydrated during the day.

Consult a Healthcare Provider

If bladder control issues persist, consult with your healthcare provider. They can provide additional strategies or treatments tailored to your needs.

Managing bladder control during pregnancy doesn’t have to be overwhelming. By following these simple tips, from practicing Kegel exercises to maintaining a healthy weight, you can effectively reduce bladder pressure and avoid unnecessary discomfort. Bladder leaks, or urinary incontinence, are a common challenge that can affect people of all ages. Whether caused by aging, childbirth, or certain medical conditions, it can be an uncomfortable and sometimes embarrassing issue. However, the good news is that there are simple, practical ways to manage and even reduce bladder leaks. In this article, we’ll explore ten effective strategies that can help you regain control and confidence, allowing you to live without the constant worry of leaks disrupting your daily life.

1. Do daily pelvic floor exercises

Pelvic floor exercises can be effective at reducing leaks. It’s important to do them properly and include short squeezes and long squeezes.

2. Stop smoking

If you smoke, you put yourself at risk of incontinence, because coughing puts strain on your pelvic floor muscles.

3. Do the right exercises

To strengthen your pelvic floor to relieve symptoms, replace high-impact exercise, such as jogging and aerobics, with strengthening exercise, such as Pilates.

4. Avoid lifting

Lifting puts strain on your pelvic floor muscles, so avoid it whenever you can.

5. Lose excess weight

Being overweight can weaken your pelvic floor muscles and cause incontinence because of the pressure of fatty tissue on your bladder.

6. Treat constipation promptly

Straining to poo weakens your pelvic floor muscles and makes urinary incontinence worse.

7. Cut down on caffeine

Caffeine irritates the bladder and can make incontinence worse. Coffee has the biggest effect, so stop drinking it or switch to decaffeinated coffee.

8. Cut down on alcohol

Alcohol is a diuretic, which makes you urinate more often. Cutting down may help incontinence symptoms.

9.Drink plenty of water

Drink 6 to 8 glasses of fluid a day (but no more) unless your doctor advises you otherwise.

10. Eat the right foods

Avoid spicy and acidic foods, such as curries and citrus fruits, as they can irritate the bladder and make leaks and other incontinence symptoms worse.

Living with bladder leaks doesn’t have to hold you back. By incorporating these ten strategies into your routine, you can take proactive steps to manage incontinence and improve your quality of life. From lifestyle adjustments to specialised products, there are many solutions available to help you stay dry and comfortable. Don’t hesitate to consult a healthcare professional for personalised advice, and remember that with the right approach, you can significantly reduce or even stop bladder leaks altogether.

New Monthly Protection Briefs For Women

Monthly Protection Briefs Period Pants For WomenNew Release for August 2019

At first glance, Protect Monthlies have the appearance of many modern pants available on the market today. With its high cut leg, elasticated waistband and leg it gives a modern and contemporary look to the garment. The difference however lies in the gusset.

A three-layer system of protection that works to absorb menstruate and prevent leakage.

How Do Protect Monthlies Work?

At first glance, Protect Monthlies have the appearance of many modern pants available on the market today. With its high cut leg, elasticated waistband and leg it gives a modern and contemporary look to the garment. The difference however lies in the gusset.

A three-layer system of protection that works to absorb menstruate and prevent leakage. The gusset is made up of:

Absorbalon Microfiber Wicking Layer

The top layer works to draw menstruate away and into the gusset, ensuring a dry feel for the user.

Super Absorbent Padding Layer

The second layer works to quickly absorb the menstruate, preventing leakage. Although thin, this layer can retain up to 30 – 50mls of fluid. Far superior to the maximum absorbency of a tampon

Waterproof Protective Layer

The final layer ensures that no menstruate can leak from the gusset due to the waterproof liner through the central panel of the brief.

These three layers are combined into a compact and discreet layer that’s not only comfortable but leakproof.

Why choose Protect Monthlies over Traditional Sanitary Products?

The average woman will use 16,000 tampons or pads in her life time, resulting in around 7 billion tampons and pads ending up on landfill each year Most contain chemicals and synthetic materials such as plastics. As we are all aware these plastics not only take along to breakdown but also leak into nature.

These micro plastics are then polluting our rivers, lakes and oceans contributing to the destruction of the natural world and its ecosystems.

Using Protect Monthlies will not only reduce plastic waste and subsequent pollution but also save you significant amounts of money year on year. We guarantee a minimum of 250 washes per pant, making them a far superior product over time than disposables.

Furthermore, Protect Monthlies offer a level of protection and comfort that disposable products cannot. With a fluid holding capacity of 30-50mls and the added protection of the waterproof lining you can go to bed knowing that your sheets are protected and whilst worn in the day that your clothes are too

New Product – The OooPS Pant for Stress Incontinence

The OooPS pant for stress incontinenceNew Release for August 2019

Conditions such as cystitis or a weak pelvic floor after childbirth can be some of the reasons for developing a sensitive weak bladder which can in turn lead to stress incontinence. These conditions are a lot more common than people are led to believe; with around one in three women in the UK experiencing these conditions.

The Reasoning Behind The OooPS Pant

Conditions such as cystitis or a weak pelvic floor after childbirth can be some of the reasons for developing a sensitive weak bladder which can in turn lead to stress incontinence. These conditions are a lot more common than people are led to believe; with around one in three women in the UK experiencing these conditions.

OooPS moments as a result of stress incontinence can occur at any time. Bladder leaks, or OooPS moments as we call them, can occur doing the simplest of things such as a cough, a sneeze or laughter

Our Brief aim to give you a freedom that most briefs on the market do not. The freedom to chuckle without concern, the ability to jump around at your local gym, even lifting your little one whilst knowing that all the time you have the OooPS pant on you will be protected.

The Pant is designed with the younger and middle-aged woman in mind. However, this does not stop those older women who want to have a little added protection and have that modern and contemporary look to their underwear

What Makes OooPS Different to Others?

OooPS pants have the appearance of many modern pants available on the market currently today. It has a high cut leg with an elasticated waistband and centrefold legs. What differs us from the others is within the gusset; a pad compromising of 3 layers offering protection against leakage and the ability to absorb.

It all starts with the Absorbalon microfiber wicking layer. This draws fluid into the gusset ensuring a dry feel for the user. Secondary is the super absorbent padding layer. What appears as a thin layer still has the ability to hold 70–100mls.

Finally comes the waterproof layer which prevents any fluid passing out of the gusset. The three layers are combined into a compact system that is discreet, comfortable and leakproof.

EMDA WOMEN OF WORTH AWARD 2009

Incontinence product manufacturer Sam ORegan award winnerPress Release

EMDA – Women of Worth award 2009-03-09
Sam O’Regan – P&S Healthcare Ltd
Most Innovate Business

SAM O’Regan, managing director of P&S Healthcare in Hucknall, has won the Most Innovative Business category in the East Midlands at the East Midlands Women of Worth Awards.

Established five years ago, P&S produces a wide range of high quality incontinence products and garments for men, women and children, all designed and manufactured at its facility in Hucknall.

She set up her business after identifying that there was a gap in the market for underwear that looked and felt normal, but provided the protection needed by incontinence sufferers.

The business now employs 21 people at its facility in Hucknall and is looking to expand still further.

Mrs  O’Regan said:

“I have worked hard to get my company off the ground and I feel that I have succeeded in what I set out to accomplish.

“Being recognised for these achievements by winning this award drives me to continue to provide high quality products that make a difference to people’s lives.”

John O’Reilly, East Midlands Development Agency’s business support director, said:

“There are lots of very successful women in business across the East Midlands. The Women of Worth Awards give us the opportunity to recognise the contributions that business women have made and will hopefully encourage other women who may be thinking about setting up their own businesses to become entrepreneurs.”

The Women of Worth Awards were the culmination of this year’s Women in Business Conference,
